We are driven by a vision of the
future, and it’s built out of wood.
The Wood Research and Development (WRD) team might be credentialed as engineers, but we’re preservationists and conservationists at heart.
We believe that timber should and will be the global building material of choice. We are working hard to get there by restoring structures of the past, innovating designs for the future, and educating the world to design confidently with wood and mass timber.
OUR Story
The timber team with 150 years of combined experience
Inspired by his passion for all things timber, our founder, Senior Engineer, and Wood Technologist, Dr. Daniel A. Tingley, founded Wood Science and Technology Institute in 1984.
Since then, the name has changed, the team has grown, our reach has expanded, and our services have evolved. Wood Research and Development (WRD) now has offices in the United States, Canada, and Australia, though our clients and projects span the globe.
Through every stage, Dan’s focus has remained the same: educating structure owners, local governments, preservation groups, and private clients both about their specific projects and the benefits of preserving heritage structures.
Dr. Tingley’s engineering staff is second-to-none in wooden structure design and preservation, and our team has restored many projects, including WingSpread, a Frank Lloyd Wright creation, which other engineers either thought were impossible or too costly to save.
No matter what your timber project may entail, we welcome you to join us as we design the future by reviving the past.
Our Mission
To promote the superior advantages of timber infrastructure through education, design, and engineering.
OUR vision
To secure a sustainable future by making mass timber the global infrastructure choice.
OUR values
Our values, or the TIMBERS way, is a method for approaching our work, relationships with one another and our clients, and our daily lives.
Teamwork – Do what it takes to move forward as one
Innovation – Strive to improve while pursuing new ideas
Mindfulness – Act with purposeful awareness of the impact of our actions
Belonging – Create a community committed to supporting each other to be their best
Embracing Safety – Work with safety as the top priority
Respect – Welcome all input and treat everyone with civility
Sustainability – Build a better future in a responsible and meaningful way
your timber structure can be trusted, and so can we.
Wood Research and Development (WRD) maintains rigorous standards for safety, innovation, and excellence. Our team is accredited and certified so that we can be the engineering consultants you trust for recommendations on repairing, restoring, or designing timber structures that will last for generations to come.
Dr. Dan Tingley holds 42 patents for innovations in timber restoration and strength reinforcement.
Our crews are comprised of skilled engineers and Level II Advanced Timber Technicians
WRD’s Lab is accredited through the IAS (International Accreditation Service)
Dr. Dan Tingley has won numerous awards, including the NOVA award for innovation from the Construction Innovation Forum

Ecology pledge
With every inspection and design, WRD prioritizes our planet.
Our projects are carbon negative, which means we go beyond carbon neutrality to offset more carbon than we emit.
Our mass timber products are sourced sustainably, through responsibly harvesting trees from sources that replant more trees than they cut down.
We also recycle as many materials as we can, incorporating repurposed timbers into our designs.
Longevity guarantee
New Designs
The structures we design, if built according to our specifications, will last for more than a century.
In comparison, the average lifespan of a concrete bridge is only 50 to 70 years.
Restoration
The projects we restore will at least double their life-expectancy, regaining structural integrity to stand for another generation.
