Compression & Density Characteristics of Sandwich Panels

The staff from WRD worked with Alchem (Sandwich Panel producer from Anchorage, Alaska) to obtain a new evaluation report from the Evaluation Service of the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO ES) for a new proprietary product; a polyurethane foamed-in-place sandwich panel.  The evaluation report number is PCF_5524 (1,529kB downloadable PDF document).

This work necessitated the modification of existing Acceptance Criteria (AC) in order to create testing requirements for the new product.

The compression test was designed to simulate loads as they occur over the bearing supports of a panel.  The density test was used to verify that all the panels had similar compression characteristics, as a higher density foam core would likely have increased the compressive strength.

Tests were performed in accordance with ASTM C 271 and ASTM C 365.
